Pieter thrives on adventure. He is a husband, father, wildland fire manager, sea rescue volunteer, and a closet-nerd (at least, he likes to think it’s still in the closet). Pieter is easily frustrated if he is not acquiring new skills, a driving force for his constant need to improve, learn and discover.
Pieter’s spark in the wildland fire scene was lit very early in life when, as a boy, he used to go to fires with his father, a now-retired forester. Pieter’s father taught him how to read and fight fires, and these lessons instilled many versatile and strategic skills that would aid him through life. Somehow, the fire stayed in his blood, and he’s been working in the industry professionally for nearly a decade.
After school, Pieter spent a short time dedicated to studying music (the drumkit), a time he looks back on with fondness. He later completed a bachelor’s degree in Communication Science and a Post Grad Diploma in Business Administration.
Before starting his career in fire, Pieter spent two years working as an instructor in anti-poaching, firearms, survival, and hand-to-hand combat. These days, however, being a father has quelled his thirst for danger a ‘little’. And so, his latest favorite “hobby” is volunteering his service as a rescue crew member for the South African National Sea Rescue Institute.
Pieter has always had a need to escape to the wilds, even if it is just for a few hours. His favorite method of traversing is on his mountain bike or trail running through unexplored places in a beat-up pair of shoes that are starting to resemble Swiss cheese in more than one way.
He and his wife are also new(ish) homeowners, which has opened up the world of DIY: A fabulously frustrating, fable-like world that Pieter finds infuriating and utterly satisfying.
But, if Pieter is not outside or busy fixing something, it’s probably because his inner nerd has surfaced.
Although he tries to control this part of himself, Pieter can’t help but love PC games (especially open-world RPGs), fantasy novels, and making his friends and family sit through an annual viewing of the Lord of the Rings (extended versions, of course).
Pieter’s family is his ground wire. He loves his wife and two children dearly – they’re his Z-Fighters, his Justice League, his Fellowship.
